I love reading St Augustine

but what can I learn about raising children from a fourth century Priest?

"As a baby, of course, I knew no Latin either, but I learned it without fear and fret, simpy by keeping my ears open while my nurses fondled me and everyone laughed and played happily with me.  I learned it without being forced by threats of punishment, because it was my own wish to be able to give expression to my thoughts.  I could never have done this if I had not learnt a few words, not from schoolmasters, but from people spoke to me and listened when I delivered to their ears whatever thoughts I had conceived.  This clearly shows that we learn better in a free spirit of curiousity than under fear and compulsion."

This passage was a reaffirmation to me to the need for parents to be intentional about teaching our kids.  I love those times when conversations naturally lead toward God and spirituality, and we need to not be afraid to go there.  We may not know the answers, so what?  Our kids need to know that.  They need to come along on our spiritual journey.  They need to see that they do not have the answers, and they need to see our response.

OK...for those of you who know St. Augustine, you know that the passage does not end there...

"But your law, O God, permits the free flow of curiousity to be stemmed by force.  From the schoolmaster's cane to the ordeals of martyrdom, your law prescribes bitter medicine to retrieve us from the noxious pleasures that cause us to deset you."

This does not disqualify my comments.  Yes, we know this is reality.

"I would not have studied at all if I had not been obliged to do so, and what a person does against his will is not to his own credit, even if what he does is good in itself. Nor was the good which came of it due to those who compelled me to study, but to you, my God. For they had not the insight to see that I might put lessons which they forced me to learn to any other purpose than to the satisfaction of man's insatiable desire for the poverty that he calls wealth, and the infamy that he know as fame." - St Augustine

However, it should not stop us from striving to teach our kids in a way that takes advantage of that "free spirit of curiousity."

April Showers
Welcome to April!

I just came back from the BLOWN AWAY conference in Cambridge this weekend.  I am inspired, and excited with new ideas!  On Saturday, we had the privilege of having a session with Carey Nieuwhof.  Carey is the pastor of Connexus church in Barrie, and has recently released a book with Reggie Joiner ( Think Orange: imagine the impact when church and family collide) called Parenting Beyond Your Capacity.  I am still working myself through Orange, but this book will definitely be the next on my bedside table.  Carey Nieuwhof spoke on 5 family values for the modern family, that will make a "big difference to your kids as you try to raise your kids spiritually and morally."  I have posted these values below, and encourage you all to take 20 minutes to listen to them all.

Currently, as I write this, the sun is streaming through my window, and the snow is falling.  Typical indecisive weather for April!!  You can however count on you and your kids have lots of fun and learning tons about God this month at Grandview Kids.

Our own Aaron Roeck of "Rex Magic" invites you to "Magic for Malvern", an enjoyable evening with family & friends, of illusions, comedy and entertainment.  ALL funds will aid Toronto inner city teens to receive leadership training at a Christian camp setting - Camp Widjiitiwin.  This family friendly presentation is geared to adults, but age 5+ children are welcomed.  You can support this benefit show by purchasing your ticket today in the Atrium.  ($6/person)

Last week we kicked off our Spring Missions focus (part 1 at least).  Our penny drive is aiming to raise money for breakfast feedings in Uganda.  It costs .11 to provide a child with breakfast.  Children were encouraged to stick pennies to the provided paper, and return by April 17th.  These will be posted on the walls to see how many children we can feed.  Part 2 of our spring mission?s project will be introduced May 8th during our "serving God, serving Others? unit.  This curriculum will be provided by April 31st.  After this unit, families will be given opportunities to work together at a family serving project.

Our Shepherds serve weekly, guiding the youngest members of Grandview to build relationships with God, others and the world through showing His Love.  To allow our shepherds to spend Easter with their families, we have given them the week off.  Children from JK- Grade 6 will take part in a open session this Sunday. Some of our talented young actors will be taking them on a journey as to what it may have been like to have experienced Christ?s death and resurrection first hand.  After we will all join in a time of celebration of the resurrection of our Saviour.  We are in need of parent's to supervise and lead children through the stations this morning.  We would love for you to come celebrate with us.  For more information, please contact me at aleruez@grandviewchurch.com

This year's theme is Starlight Rescue.   July 11-15, we will be blasting off on a galactic adventure where kids learn that with God's love in their hearts, they can shine like stars! Our Mission Verse is, "That you may become blameless and pure, children of God...(who) shine like stars in the universe." Philippians 2:15 (NIV)  A star gets its light from within, and that light shines out for all to see. When kids recognize the light and power of God within, their lives can shine like stars too!   Check out the music at http://www.godrocksvbs.com/  If you want to join our space crew for this journey, please contact Aimie LeRuez at aleruez@grandviewchurch.ca.  Participant registration will open on June 18th online, and at the Community Yard Sale.

March!
A while ago, I playfully told my daughter to "March".  She responded that she did not want to march.  "Stroll...saunter...creep" I said.  Suddenly I had all the people in the room's eyes on me and I did not know why!  Everyone was appalled that I had called my daughter a "creep".  The title of this blog is not a directive (however if you feel like marching, go right ahead).  Rather just an exclamation that it is ALREADY March!

February made me shiver....
Besides the chilly weather, this February holds little resemblance of that song.  No "bad news on the doorstep"  rather lots of exciting things are happening in and around Grandview Kids.

Kick off the Family Day holiday with a great concert at Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church.  February 20th, the GOD ROCKS! will be performing a free concert.  Pick up your tickets during office hours at Bethany's office to see this energetic and fun band that love to proclaim our much our God ROCKS!!  Check out God Rocks! at http://www.godrocks.ca

I hate the cold, but this February 26th, our family will be hitting the streets for a good cause, and teaching our kids at the same time,  The Coldest Night of the Year is a fund-raising walk-a-thon in support of the hungry, homeless and hurting. It will be hosted in Toronto and Kitchener/Waterloo from 5:00 ? 9:00pm.  The purpose of the WALK is to RAISE MONEY for three core charitable partners who faithfully serve youth, adults and families experiencing homelessness: Yonge Street Mission, Sanctuary and Ray of Hope Community Centre (formerly known as Waterloo Regional Dream Centre).  For more information please visit www.brrrr.org or www.coldestnightoftheyear.org.  To sign up, or donate, please select team Nexus.

March Break is just around the corner.  Koinonia Christian Fellowship is holding an Arts Camp during March Break for students from JK-Grade 6.  The registration deadline is March 1st.  For more information, please visit http://www.bydesignarts.ca/events/project-destiny.

We are starting to get information about some of the great Christian summer camps around Ontario.  Please check out the display board beside the Grandview Kids Welcome Centre for more information.

April 1 and 2nd Calvary Pentacostal in Cambridge is hosting a conference called blown away.  As I scanned over the workshops available during this two day conference, it is a treasure trove of resources for anyone interested in nursery, children and youth ministries.  Please check it out at http://blownawayconference.ca.  I love going to having a chance to interact with people involved in the same ministry as I am, and always come back inspired and on fire to keep doing the job God has called me to do for Him.

As I look out the window at all this snow, it is hard to believe that I am planning for this summer already!   Once again during the summer, we will be having Grandview Worships Together services.  Children from JK- Grade 4 will check in upstairs and join their family in the worship centre.  Shortly before the teaching time, the children will be invited to their own teaching time in Room 207.  I love the opportunity that Grandview Worships Together gives us to worship as a larger family of God.  I love seeing children worship God, and Children need to see their parents worship God as well.   In preparation for this, we will be introducing a few new songs to Grandview Kids, to bring upstairs this summer.  Please check out our new links (JK- Gr.1 - http://grandviewchurch.ca/jrpromiselandp140.php Grade 2-4 http://grandviewchurch.ca/srpromiselandp136.php  or Grade 5-6 http://grandviewchurch.ca/preteenpromiselandp170.php ) on the Grandview Kids website to hear some old favourites and some soon to be new favourites.  Why not play this music during dinner, or while playing board games to learn these great worship songs.  It is also a great place to find your children's lessons and memory verse (click on full curriculum).

People's thoughts must be drifting towards the promise of warmer days, and the end of shovelling.  I have had several inquiries about what Grandview is planning for our VBS this year.  This July 11-15th, Grandview will be embarking on another exciting edition of VBS.  Please stay tuned to the website, and the March newsletter for our Theme Announcement.  Registration for children entering SK - Grade 6 will open on June 18th, either online or at our Family Carnival and Yard Sale.

When the Cassels returned from Uganda last year, they remarked about how nice it was to look out the window and be able to tell what time of year it was.  Everyday in Uganda looks so similar to the rest.  May you enjoy the diversity of our Canadian weather, and find joy in the activities that come along with it.  Stay warm and healthy.

Happy New Year!
Welcome to 2011!  I am so excited as to what this year will hold.  However, I would like to take a few moments to celebrate what happened in the closing days of 2010.

Grandview was a buzz this Christmas Season.  The whole church joined together to show God's love to the Centreville Chicopee Community.  Through purchasing presents for children, donating used household items and clothes, and donating non-perishable food items, we shared God's love with hundreds of people this Christmas.  If you have not done so yet, please take a few moments to read Sherri Martin's summary of sharing days here.

Grandview Kids joyfully celebrated the birth of our Saviour through the month of December.  In worship, we introduced advent, focusing on what previous generations waited for in the birth of Jesus, and what we wait for in the return of Christ.  Our worship teams brought Christmas carols to our children, and it brought tears to my eyes to hear these little voices singing "Gloria".  December 19th, we had small group celebrations.  Each group enjoyed a time of getting to know each other better, while enjoying snacks and making crafts.

I love to read books aloud, and on December 26th, I got the opportunity to read a story to the whole Grandview family during our Grandview Worships Together service.  Small Camel realized that even though he was young, he still had an important job to do to serve Jesus.  When the children were invited to their own teaching time, we built on this.    We watched Veggietales "Star of Christmas" and discussed our Bob and Larry showed God's love the man they encountered, and how we could show God's love to the people that we encounter.

After a busy Christmas Season, I felt everyone needed a chance to relax.  Thus our PJ Sunday!  Grandview Kids participants were encouraged to wear their PJs to church.  We welcomed back the beat team, to lead us in worship.   They focused on God being a light to us when we need him, and how we can shine God's light to others.  We then moved to the gym, where we talked about the gifts that we were given, but remembered the greatest gift that we could ever receive; Jesus.  We concluded our time with some games with Christmas items, and muffins and hot chocolate.

As most people who have talked to me for even a few minutes know, I am a dreamer, an apostle.  I love dreaming about ways to help children have an authentic relationship with God.  The start of a new year presents a clean slate, with boundless opportunities.  I am so excited as to what 2011 will hold:

In the New Year, the kids have been and will continue to look at the life of Jesus, and his apostles.

Jan 23 - Parents of children aged 2 - 5 are invited to a take it home event with their children about family devotions.

The Parents and Grade 5-6 students will be invited to a take it home event on "Purity"

Kicking off March Break with another one of our great Grandview Worships Together Services.

Watch out for "Serving God, Serving Others" coming to Grandview Kids in late spring.

VBS 2011 - July 11-15.  Theme to be announced soon...

Other items that I thought you might like to know...

The God rocks! are coming to Kitchener on February 20th at 6:00pm Bethany Church.  This energetic group "God Rocks! was created to "Energize Kids With the Good News!? Through awesome music, videos, curriculum and live events, God Rocks! teaches kids important lessons from the Bible in a fun way! The God Rocks! universe is based on Luke 19:40, "If the people fall silent, the stones will cry out.?  Tickets are available at Bethany Church office during business hours.

Koinonia is offering a March Break camp called Project Destiny.  "Project Destiny is a week-long creative arts day camp allowing ourparticipants to experience a variety of creative art forms including dance, drama, vocals, and visual arts (previous experience is not required). Project Destiny is byDesign?s summer camp and will be held at Koinonia Christian Fellowship in Bloomingdale. This fun-filled week of creativity involves multiple workshops, team games, character development, and a fantastic week-end performance. "  You can register online at http://www.bydesignarts.ca/events/project-destiny

It's DECEMBER!!!
Welcome to December!  Only 21 more sleeps!

I am so excited that it is December, and the celebration of our Lord's birth is so close!  Maybe it is because I finished most of my shopping yesterday, but I am feeling especially excited right now.  It makes me remember the excitement that children have at this time of year.  And why shouldn't we be excited!   There was a baby, born in a manger, and that baby was God incarnate!  There was a choir of angels, a beautiful star in the sky, worshipping shepherds, kings from afar!  This was the fulfillment of prophecy.

Last week, we introduced advent to Grandview Kids.  We talked about waiting, and how the people of Israel had been waiting for the birth of their saviour.  At Christmas that prophecy was fulfilled.  There is more prophecy yet to be fulfilled.  The return of Jesus, and the redemption of those who love him.  A day when there is no more crying, or sickness.  When we will never be seperated from God again.  That is what we are waiting for.  Waiting can be hard, and that is what the kids and I talked about last week.  What to do while we are waiting. I have attached below the video that we watched. So often, people think that kids need high paced activity to worship.  I myself was worried, but the answers I got back after we watched this video made me realize that it impacted them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHIqOHU6Dhg&feature=related

We will continue to focus on waiting in the remaining weeks of advent.

The response to our Angel Tree was amazing.  All 107 angels were taken the first day.  This means 107 children will be receiving Christmas presents.  We always think that they are receiving presents that they would not have got.  Their parents try very hard to make Christmas enjoyable for them.  However, this causes a huge pinch in January.  By providing presents to these children, you are lessening the load on their parents.  However there will still be extra expenses.  If you have not done so, please consider taking a ornament and buying hygiene and personal products for these same children.  You may also bring in non perishable food items and drop them in the sleigh in the atrium.  If you have All of these items will be distributed at sharing days Dec 15-16 at the Centreville Chicopee Community Centre.

December 19th is our small group celebration day.  The students will have worship, and a short teaching time talking about community.  After that, each class will be participating a group activity.  Most of these activities we will be crafts, and with any craft there is the possibility of mess.  Please try to send your children in clothing that you will not be devastated if something gets on it.  I will have t-shirts that the students can put on if they forget, or are unable to wear something appropriate for craft time.

December 26th will be a Grandview Worships Together service.  All Grandview Kids will check in upstairs at the check in desk (inside the front doors).  They will worship with their families during the service.  Immediately before the sermon, JK - Grade 4 students will invited to their own teaching time in room 207.  Grade 5-6 students are welcome to join us, however they are the senior students, they will be expected to set a example for the younger children, and assist when necessary.  Children need to be picked up from room 207 after service.

After a month of Christmas celebrations, and just coming off our New Years festivities, I thought it would only be fitting to for January 2nd to be a PJ Sunday.  Children are encouraged to come to Grandview in their pajamas and slippers.  Our beat team will be leading us in worship.  Afterwards will have a time of sharing about our favourite Christmas memories, talking about God's goodness and having some goodies.  I am striving to make these goodies peanut and milk free.  If you have any other allergy concerns, please let me know at
aleruez@grandviewchurch.ca

May you and your family have the merriest of Christmases, and the happiest of new years.  May the wonder of the birth of our saviour fall fresh upon your heart this December.

Welcome to November

This weekend, I found myself with only 1 of the 4 preteen shepherds required for Sunday morning.  I sat wondering what I could do to get full time shepherds for these groups.  I realized that there was nothing that I could do.  I could only fully turn this need over to God.  I am requesting your prayer for 2 shepherds to guide these 5-6 girls in their faith journey with God.  Did you know George Barna in his book "Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions" states studies show 75% of decisions, including the decision to become a christian, happen before the age of 13?  He goes on to further state "Given the trends indicating that your spiritual condition by the age of 13 is a strong predictor of your spiritual profile as an adult, it seems clear that a deep and robust spiritual life demand intentional and strategic spiritual nuturing during the early childhood and adolescent years."

My heart aches for these 10 and 11 year old girls.  Please join me in praying for the right leaders to step into this role.

Congratulations are in order for both our Jr (JK-Gr.1) Grandview Kids and our Sr.  (Gr 2-4) Kids on each learning 100 verses collectively.  Their reward will be a pizza breakfast.  The Jr classes will enjoy their slice of pizza and drink on November 7th.  The Sr. classes will enjoy their reward the week after, November 14th.  Please contact me at aleruez@grandviewchurch.ca if you have allergy concerns.

As I look out the window, and see the lack of leaves on the trees, it is not hard to believe that Christmas is less than 2 months away.  Coming soon, we will have 2 angel trees displayed at Grandview.  This will be an variation on the stocking project that Promiseland students have participated in in past years.  There were signifigant administrative challenges to stocking project and the changes will help alleviate these challenges.

This year when you choose a angel, you will be buying for a specific person, and you will recieve a first name and age.  You will return your unwrapped gifts to the church, and they will be wrapped and distributed to the Centreville Chicopee Area.   This project will be open to all of Grandview, so that we can spread more of God's love to the CCC area this Christmas.

This month we welcomed two new worship teams to Grandview Kids.  We are excited to that these teams of teens will be each be leading us in worship once a month.

Worship does not need to be catagorized as children's or adults, and that is the goal of these teams.  We are striving to the teach the kids songs that can bridge the generations and be used in our Grandview Worships together services.

We are also happy to have the beat team back with us again this year.  They are teaching the kids some new songs, that we will be in turn teaching to the adults during a Grandview Worships Together service in the future.

We are currently looking for energetic people who love to worship their Lord enthuiastically to form a second beat team.  If you or someone you know is interested in being involved in this, please let me know at aleruez@grandviewchurch.ca

Our worship arts project continues...  God has given us all different gifts, and all these gifts can be used to glorify and worship God.  We are continuing to explore this, and are introduced our first project on October 3rd.  Many of you are familiar with the concept of God sightings from VBS.  We would like to continue searching for God sightings this year, and will be passing around disposable cameras to help the children capture their God sightings.  Children are also welcome to take photos on personal cameras and submit them as well.  Please forward your child's best 3 photos to
aleruez@grandviewchurch.ca  These photos will be displayed at our end of year, Promiseland Art Gallery.

1 month in...
It is hard to believe that this Sunday marks one month of Promiseland.  We have already had a lot of exciting stuff happen so far.  Let me take a few moments to fill you in...

Hopefully you noticed something new as soon as you walked into the Promiseland doors that first Sunday.  Grandview focuses on the UP, IN, OUT triangle, and our Promiseland Welcome Centre has been transformed into a triangle to represent this as well.  This year in Promiseland we will be growing friendships; our friendship with God (UP) our friendships with each other (IN) and our friendship with the world by showing God's love (OUT).  This is the language that we will be using as we talk about worship, teaching, small group time and mission's project.

This year we have revamped our memory verse program.  Instead of memory verse books, the children have certificates that their shepherds will attach stickers to when they have learned the verse, and send home at the end of the quarter.  Our Jr and Sr Promiseland will be working together respectively to achieve a group prize.  Once a department reaches 100 memory verses, they will be rewarded with a pizza breakfast.  The rewards will change over the course of the year, but it will always be a group prize.  By working together as a group, the students can encourage each other to learn their verses.  By receiving the prize as a group, it gives our students another chance to interact with children in different age groups, and build new friendships.

Two weeks ago, the students in Promiseland welcomed Pastor Robert and his wife Sarah from Uganda.  Pastor Robert is the pastor of True Worship Church and runs Fountain of hope school.  The students and I reminsced about the Uganda Experience that Promiseland experienced last year with the help of the Cassels.  Then we had the chance to ask Pastor Robert and Sarah some questions.  The kids were eager to learn more about life in Uganda.  Last Sunday, Damali joined us in Promiseland, and told us about Sonrise baby home and the 22 children she and her team care for.

Last year, we explored using different forms of worship.  God has given us all different gifts, and all these gifts can be used to glorify and worship God.  We are continuing to explore this, and are introducing our first project on October 3rd.  Many of you are familiar with the concept of God sightings from VBS.  We would like to continue searching for God sightings this year, and will be passing around disposable cameras to help the children capture their God sightings.  Children are also welcome to take photos on personal cameras and submit them as well.  More information will come home in the coming weeks.  These photos will be displayed at our end of year, Promiseland Art Gallery.

Sunday, October 10th will be our first Grandview Worships Together service of the school year.  For this Sunday, students will check in upstairs, as they did in the summer, and join their families in the worship centre.  Shortly before the teaching time, the students will be dismissed to their own teaching time in room 207 (the old soul cafe).  The students will explore the same topic as the adults, only in a more age appropriate manner.  Future Grandview Worships Together services will be on December 26, March 14, and May 23rd.  I love the opportunity that these gatherings give our families to worship together, and to allow children to see their parents model worship for them.

My apologies to those of you who have attempted to use our Promiseland page on the website in the past few weeks. I have neglected to update it, with the busyness of fall start up.  However, this page is a great resource for finding out what your child learned that week, memory verses, upcoming events and links to our Grandview Family Faith book.  For those of you who have not used our Family Faith Book, I encourage you to check it out.  We have a talented team of writers who create this book.  I have shared with some that the book they created last year for the Fruit of the Spirit, was better than the curriculum I purchased this summer!   On the Promiseland page, you can also connect to my blog.  This newsletter will be posted there, and I will post there as I have information to share with you.  I fell down on my blogging last year, and cannot promise how frequently it will be updated, but if you have a chance, check it out from time to time.

Thanks for reading this, and I will send out e-mails when updates are available.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend with your family.

Sonrise Baby Home
It has been almost one week since Grandview's Uganda Team left Pearson airport.  They have been busy with various ministries.  Check out what they have been doing at http://wakisivillage.blogspot.com/
.
When I was researching Uganda a few days ago, I found numbers stating the number of AIDS orphans in Uganda to be 1.2 million.  However, in my further research I have found more recent stats, which places the number of AIDS orphans at over 2 million.  20% of all children under the age of 17 are orphans.  The team in Uganda is currently ministering at Sonrise Babyhome run by a wonderful women named Domali.  She has done more in her years than many could imagine, and has a sincere love for these little survivors.  Check out Damali's story, the children in her care, and a beautiful video at  http://www.sonrisebabyhome.org/.
.
Kids activities:
.
AIDS is a difficult subject to discuss with children, however it should be discussed with them.  Obviously, the way you handle this subject is different according to the age of the child.  The youngest children can just be taught that this is a preventable disease.  Older children can be taught that God gives us rules to protect us from harm, and when we do not follow God's rules we put ourselves at risk.

20% of children under the age of 17 are orphans.  Find out how many children are in your child's class, and share with your child what 20% of his/her class would look like.  What differences would it make in those children's lives to have no parents.

Take your children to the Sonrise Babyhome site http://www.sonrisebabyhome.org/ and look at the pictures of the babies within Damali's care.  Watch the video on the homepage with your kids, paying special attention to Stephen.  Pause the video, and show how sickly he was, and then show how healthy he is now.  This is a great demonstration of people showing God's love in action.

Uganda 101

Our team arrived on Saturday in Uganda.  To find out more details check out their blog at http://wakisivillage.blogspot.com/

The information below is not necessarily to be used to educate our children.  Rather, this overview of Uganda is to educate ourselves on the environment Ugandans live in.

Civil war continues to rock Uganda and has caused the displacement of 1.7 million people.  This armed rebellion is led by Joseph Kony and his Lord?s resistance army against the Ugandan government.  The group adheres to a blend of Christianity, Mysticism, traditional religion and witchcraft, and claims to be establishing a state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition .  International warrants have been in place since 2005 against Kony and his officials, for human right violations including abduction, murder and slavery.  The Lord?s resistance army abducts children and uses them as soldiers or wives.  These soldiers are taught that God has instructed them to rub shea oil on their body as protection from bullets, and to never avoid being shot.

Uganda is a land locked country in Eastern Africa.  The country is divided into 2 regions by Lake Kyoga.  The climate differs between the two regions.  The Northern region is much drier and experiences times of drought.  The southern region is much wetter.  Jinja, the city in which our team is ministering, is located in the eastern portion of the Southern Region.  The Nile leaves from Lake Victoria via Ripon Falls near Jinja.

Uganda is one quarter of the size of Ontario, but has 10 times the population.  The median age of the Ugandan population is 15.  78% of the population lives under the international poverty line of $2 US/day.  Uganda is considered a HIV success story, with rates decreasing from 13% in the early 90s to 4.1% in 2003.  However, HIV has left 1.2 million children as orphans and the number continues to grow.

The 2002 census shows that 82% of Ugandans are Christian, equally split between Catholic and Protestant.  However the prosperity gospel is prevelent in Uganda, and Islam is erecting large beautiful churches in the area.  Islam is gaining followers as people do not believe that God could be present in a meager church.  However, the pastors that using the knowlege that they have been educated with.  One pastor reports that he went home, and began to live what he learned, and that many muslims have come to him to ask him how he lives as he does.

Please be in prayer for our team.  Not only that they will have safety and that God will use them, but also that they will allow God to change them through this.  As they return and adjust to coming home, pray that they will be able to share what they learned with those that did not go with them.

Activities to do with your children;

Let?s compare the population of Uganda with that of Ontario.  Take one 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and cut it in half.  The population density of Uganda is 139/km2 while Ontario is 13/km2.    We are going to draw one 3 inch stick person for every 10 people.  You will end up with one piece of paper with 1.3 stick people and one with almost 14.  Discuss with your children what they think it would be like to live in a country with so many people.

Let?s look at their finances.  78% of Ugandans live on less than $2/day.  Figure out what you spend on food today, and compare it with the amount of money a Ugandan family has.  Discuss how you as a family could live on that amount of money (food choices, not everyone eating, etc).

Travelling to Uganda
Grandview has sent four teams of short term missionaries to Uganda, and the fifth team is currently on their way.  Past teams have delivered home kits, school kits, prepared breakfasts, ministered in orphanages, and provided training for local pastors.   "Building off the work and relationships formed over four previous trips to Africa, Grandview is now partnering with FEB International and GIVE International in order to continue valuable kingdom work in the Jinja area of Uganda."
In this society, where too many children believe "it is all about me".   I am striving to teach my children that it is not.  In James 1:27 we are taught  "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."  When children are aware of the widows and the orphans of the world, the focus is taken off themselves.  Let's teach our kids together "To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
Our team that is heading to Uganda has had a rocky start.  Their scheduled flight from  Pearson on Thursday evening, was cancelled, and they are trying again today.    The team will leave Toronto (God willing) at 6 pm tonight and fly to Brussels where they will land at approximately 7:45 their time (6 hours ahead).  From there they will travel to Entebbe, in Uganda (8 hours ahead of us).  Break out the old atlas, or check it out on the internet.  Show the kids where the team is flying, how long it is taking them, and how it is a different time of day there.
Next we are going to find our more about the country of Uganda.  Check in to see what we learn.

Christmas Past?

I was happy to put the Christmas decorations away on the weekend.  It meant the toys all were put away, the boxes were in the recycling and that my house felt less cluttered.  After it was all away, I felt sad.  My time with my family and celebrating my Saviour's birth was over.  I read this over the holidays, and thought I would share it for you.  I know that Christmas can be a stressful and harried time, but this is how I want it to be, and will strive to make it.  Even though Christmas is past for this year, I can still strive to make these points a reality in our family's lives.

I believe that Christmas is more than a time for parties and ornaments; it is a time for remembering Christ and the incarnation of God?s love in human flesh.

I believe there are gifts more important than the ones under the Christmas tree, the things we teach our children, the way we share ourselves with friends, and the industry with which we set about reshaping the world in our time.

I believe that the finest carols are often sung by the poorest voices; from hearts made warm by the wonder of the season.

I believe in the angel?s message that we should not be afraid?that the Child of Bethlehem is able to overcome all anxieties and insecurities.

I believe in prayer and quietness as a way of appropriating Christmas?that if I wait in silence I will experience the presence of the one born in the manger, for he lives today as surely as he lived then.

I believe in going away from Christmas as the wise men went "another way." I want to be different when these days are past?more centred, more thoughtful, more caring.

And I believe God will help me.
